Gesso and Oil paints on Canvas. (I forgotten the size of the painting but it is somewhere slightly bigger than an A3)
The painting was painted as a birthday gift for my grandmother, it was painted within the time frame of two weeks. It began as a phone call my mother made to my aunt on the subject of my portraits, where it was suggested that painted one as a gift. It was our village (root) tradition that the elderly has a black and white portrait either painted or drawn of them to remember them before they pass.
With the mission at hand, I decided to paint in colour as I felt a painting that was black and white was depressing. I wanted a painting that was lively, something that celebrated her life rather than mourn over her death... and I also wanted something challenging as obviously my colouring skills isn't up to scratch. But at least I had fun with the result.
A close up of the face can be viewed here : [link]

I think your colouring skills are up to scratch plenty, the way the colours are so vibrant and the brush strokes are... uh... whats the word... Well, I like them D:<. Your grandmother is beautiful in the way that elderly people are, and you painted her very well <3.
awww. thank you very much for ur kind comments. lol my grandmother complained that she looked too old in this painting. lol was one of the most funniest comment i ever had infact.
I actually find your color choices are well done... perhaps with only the hair not having been spent enough time on in terms of color (even gray or silver hair is rarely completely monochromatic). Also, although I have this problem too, normally the cheeks and the nose are more saturated and the rest of the face is not... It's really tough to nail that though, since the transition is usually so subtle it's barely perceptible.
The only major critique I actually have is the composition... you should generally leave a little head room above the top of the head to not make it feel so confined or close unless it is a specific crop... but when you include the whole head, it's best to leave a bit of breathing room above it or it creates some tangent points like you have here with the hair.
Still, my dear, it is so good to see you really working on your colors and your texturing skills, it shows in this piece. All the creases, wrinkles, and character in her face really does portray such a long life, and I think you're right about color vs. black and white.
I'm sooo glad I found you, I'm really enjoying seeing your work here.

that's bloody excelent! very well done! you've used different colours to make a realistic skin tone really well, which makes me jealous, 'cause it's something I always had trouble with.
Wonderful painting Sin-Mae, your grandmother loves it I'm sure. Please ignore all criticism, the is a beautifully rendered painting. it is an instant FAV.
